A24 and Chernin Entertainment have announced today they will release Egor Abramenko’s (Sputnik) next horror film Altar. The film is written by Will Soodik (Westworld) based on a short story by Philip Fracassi.

The plot follows a 13-year-old boy whose innocence is destroyed over a single summer day by his sister’s abusive ex-boyfriend, as well as by the horrors of his absent parents. As grim as these realities are, the true terror of the day awaits below the serene surface of the local pool, where the eldritch nightmare hides. The film is set to star Lily Collias (Good One) and newcomer Hudson Behling, with January Jones (Mad Men), David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) and Kyle MacLachlan (Fallout) rounding out the cast.

Egor Abramenko is an established award-winning director of commercials and music videos from Russia. He graduated from The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 2009 and immediately dove into the world of music videos and commercials. Since then, he has been honing his craft and evolving as a genre-oriented director working with such brands as Google, BMW, Visa, Samsung, Danone, Budweiser, and many others. In 2017 he made a sci-fi thriller short The Passenger which was selected for Fantastic Fest. Shortly after, Egor started to work on his first feature, Sputnik. Sputnik was accepted to have its world premiere in Tribeca, before a wide-release in Russia by Sony. It was acquired by IFC Films for US distribution.

A24 will handle the global release of the film. Principal photography for the horror film will start in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on August 19 and wrap up by October 4.
