CATS Trailer Drops, Is Definitely Based On A Weird Musical!

And now we have arguably the second biggest trailer to have dropped yesterday. CATS, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same name. Whoo boy.

Okay, so, first and foremost, I need to establish something. I have never seen CATS. I’ve seen pictures, and I know it exists, but that’s about it. And it’s not like I’m not a fan of musicals! I even like some of Lloyd Webber’s musicals (Phantom is a somewhat guilty pleasure of mine). I just…never got around to listening to the soundtrack or reading a synopsis or anything. So I’ve gone into this about as cold as one can get.

And it is surreal. I’m about to express an opinion about as unpopular as when I declared that I felt that the Sonic movie trailer was mostly fine, aside from Sonic’s design. Because…yeah, I’m actually intrigued. The cats themselves look fine to me (though choosing to lean on the anthropomorphic, basically human aesthetic of the musical rather than animating them was a bold choice). I admit that for whatever reason I’m bad at noticing the uncanny valley and CGI in general, so your mileage may vary on that. And they got People! James Corden, Dame Judy Dench, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson! All good actors and/or singers.

And Francesca Hayward, who is playing what I think is the main cat (the trailer certainly frames her as such at least) appears to be having a great time playing this part. In fact, everyone at least looks like they’re having fun. And honestly, when it comes to musicals, so long as the singing is good and everyone is having fun I can forgive a lot.

Do I have questions? Oh, absolutely, I have no idea what the plot is, or where the humans are, or why half the cats are wearing clothes, or anything! But unlike the Top Gun: Maverick trailer, I really can’t bring myself to care. This looks surreal and fun! I love the scale gags, with all the human-sized furniture and the dedication to making them feel relatively cat-sized. I love how good Jennifer Hudson’s song “Memory” is, and how I can already tell bits about the different cats’ personalities from what we see of them.

I’m sorry y’all, but while I concede that this could be a trainwreck, I am currently actually interested and excited in this movie. I mean, anything could happen, but I liked the trailer at least!

Gay, she/her. An unabashed Disney fangirl, who may or may not have an excessive love of shipping, comics, and RPGs. She's not saying. And anything you've heard about attempts to start a cult centered around Sofia Boutella is...probably true.
