The Fandomentals handles a lot of entertainment news. Most of the time, the reactions tend to vary from muted excitement to outright dread (mostly because all the news these days is shitty reboots and sequels). But when the news that Legally Blonde would be returning to screens after 15 years on ice, the response was unanimous: screaming. Incoherent screaming. And air horns. So many air horns.
In the 17 years since its first release, Legally Blonde has occupied a prominent spot in American culture. Not only did it get a sequel, Red, White, & Blonde, but it spawned a less successful direct-to-DVD tween spinoff Legally Blondes and an incredibly successful Broadway musical originally starring Laura Bell Bundy.
This sequel will be no simple cash grab. The producers are of course bringing back Reese Witherspoon back to play Elle Woods, but she’s not the only vet who’s returning. Original screenwriters Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, a duo that may actually be the best ever as they also brought us 10 Things I Hate About You, Ella Enchanted, and She’s The Man, are back to pen the script. Original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are also back, but Witherspoon will also produce with her Hello Sunshine company. No word on who might replace Robert Luketic in the director’s chair.
