Sometimes at The Fandomentals we get unexpected and interesting products to try and ENERGYbits, an algae only ingestible which the company claims support energy, beauty, wellness, and vitality is one such product.
I got to try a sample set of the four products over the course of the month and was really interested because most supplements or health supportive products on the market are full of ingredients that I can’t eat due to religious reasons or sound too fake. I might be quick to take up new technologies or makeup products but I’m super hesitant in trying random supplements or gummies.
However, I thought the idea of ENERGYbits® was interesting since algae is so well documented for having positive health impacts, and spirulina specifically has been used by NASA astronauts!
Per their website, “ENERGYbits® algae tablets are nutrient dense “bits of food” that can replace supplements, snacks, protein, vegetables or even meals.” They grow their algae in fresh water, air dried and pressed into tiny tablets that can be swallowed or chewed.
There are four different kinds. Their energy and beauty versions are made from spirulina while the vitality version is made from a mix of spirulina and chlorella (another type of algae), and the recovery version is just chlorella.
A large bag of one of the four is $130 for 1000 tablets, where the listed serving size is 30 tablets so that’s 1000 for a thirty day supply. Honestly, it’s pretty expensive, I won’t lie, but I did find myself having more energy after eating six tablets each morning.
However, I would not under any circumstances chew the tablets, which is what I did the first time that I tried them and it was a mistake. Algae is green and the tablets are super chewy and I had to spend unmentionable minutes of time brushing the residue out of my teeth. Definitely just swallow them if you try them!
According to the website and product listing, BEAUTYbits for example, had three times the protein of steak, high chlorophyll, high antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and 40 different vitamins/minerals to help build my skin, hair and nails, prevent wrinkles/blemishes, reduce inflammation, stop cravings, satisfy hunger and increase energy.
Now of course none of these claims have been evaluated by the FDA and the site has the standard disclaimer that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and that people should consult with their physician before using.
I can’t say that I saw a ton of changes after having them for a month, though it was nice to get more protein in because I never have enough protein. These definitely are not filling enough (for me) to satisfy hunger or serve as a meal replacement (which I would never suggest!) but they did not mess with my stomach.
I plan to finish out the bags that were provided for review to see if I’ll buy more, but they were novel enough that I am interested to see what the company does in the future.
