2016 is finally over, and the world can breathe a collective sigh of relief. With a new year comes new opportunities to see everyone grow closer together, something we all could use these days. What better way for this to happen then through the releases and debuts coming out in 2017. I’ve traversed the internet in search of all the movies and video games I’m most excited for, and compiled a list of my top five for what I hope can make 2017 a much better place.
1. Wonder Woman (Movie)
Wonder Woman was a movie that when first announced, had me very nervous. She was never a character that I had a tremendous knowledge of, minus the average backstory garnered by a quick google search. But with the release of the first trailer, and the second more recently, I was out at my local comic book store getting all the trade paperbacks I could find.
With this being DC’s first movie featuring a female protagonist, I’m very excited to see how they portray Princess Diana. It looks like it has phenomenal fight scenes on par with Batman vs. Superman, as well as some comedy sprinkled in, looking at the life of a woman in that time period. Definitely a movie I’m extremely excited for.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Video Game)
I’ve always been a huge fan of Nintendo, and pride myself on having a copy of most of the major releases on my shelves back home in London. The Legend of Zelda is no different, and god does this game look gorgeous in every shape of the word. The art seems reminiscent of older games like Twilight Princess and even Ocarina of Time. The music is enchanting, the world feels like it’s taken a page out of Shadow of the Colossus in terms of the size relation between you and the environment, and something about the voice narration in the trailer had me ready to draw a sword and go on a grand adventure once again. Though I may not like the WII U, I’m ready to pick this childhood favourite up once again.
3. American Gods (TV Show)
American Gods is a show that feels as though it hasn’t gotten as much hype as it should have. Play Electric Sam online slot for free on this page. However being a big fan of Neil Gaiman as a writer, I’m very interested on where they go with this.
For those of you who don’t know, American Gods follows a man named Shadow who ends up working for Wednesday, who is actually Odin, the God of Nordic mythology. They began to gather up the Gods across America who find themselves without believers on a weird road trip-like adventure. The novel was phenomenal, and the first look gets me even more excited. It feels like a gritter Rick Riordan story and seems very fun in all honesty.
4. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Movie)
As a kid growing up in London, my inspiration for how to live my life was James Bond. It influenced my life so much that I learned a black belt in Judo, learned to speak French and German, and perfected the art of saying my name backwards in any introduction.
All joking aside, spy flicks have always had a special place in my heart, and Kingsman is one of my most recent obsessions. Kingsman: The Golden Circle follows our favourite duo to America to meet up with the Statesman, the American counterpart to the Kingsman. With the wacky villains, beautifully crafted fight scenes, and the almost Bungo Stray Dogs plot, I’m excited to see what this film has to offer.
5. Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy (Video Game)
Okay hear me out now. Most of you have probably never heard of this game, plus this wouldn’t exactly be on most people’s lis. But to me it’s the one thing I’m most excited for.
Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy is a spinoff of the popular but very underrated Professor Layton series. Featuring his daughter, the game takes you through the streets of London as you investigate… well we aren’t quite sure what you investigate, but we do know there will be puzzles. And as Chairman of the London Society of Puzzles (yup.), I love puzzles. I hope you guys pick up this game as it seems like an absolutely adorable entry in an all ready absolutely adorable series.
As usual, I find myself diving into things that are less mainstream in terms of what I’m excited for, and this is only a small list. hopefully, it’ll be a great year for all of our favorite pieces of media. What’s getting you most excited?
