To Pimp A Panther: Kendrick Lamar To Produce Black Panther Soundtrack

2018 may be the Year of the Dog, but for superhero fans it’s looking like the Year of the Panther. The hype train for Black Panther has kicked into overdrive as we rapidly approach the film’s February release date. Ever since Ryan Coogler signed on to direct, every new release about the film has been hype. Casting, trailers, sneak peeks…all have been perfect. The final touch would be the sound. How do you capture the importance of Black Panther in its soundtrack, while making it feel like a superhero film?

It appears that Kendrick Lamar, and producer “Top Dawg” Tiffith, knows the answer. Pitchfork announced today that the two will produce and curate the film’s soundtrack, including tracks specially recorded for the film. It will be the first Marvel film to receive such a treatment.

While Kendrick Lamar may seem “big” for a superhero movie, he’s an unsurprising choice. The seven-time Grammy winner has made a name for himself as one of the most socially involved rappers in the game, with his music drawing on myriad elements from the African-American cultural experience and lyrics that deal with issues like racism, discrimination, and police brutality. No doubt he’ll bring that influence to a film that Rolling Stone’s Tre Johnson called “an important resetting of a standard of what’s possible around creating a mythology for2018 may be the Year of the Dog, but for superhero fans it’s looking like the Year of the Panther. Director Ryan Coogler has expressed excitement for the work Lamar and Tiffith will produce, stating in a press release “I am honored to be working with such an incredible artist whose work has been so inspirational, and whose artistic themes align with those we explore in the film. I can’t wait for the world to hear what Kendrick and TDE have in store.”

The first song from the album dropped today as well. The song is a collaboration between Lamar and neo-soul singer SZA.

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, and Angela Basset. It was produced by Kevin Feige for Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios. It is set for release February 16, 2018.
