Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Trailer Drops, Close Your Eyes But Listen!

So…the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie dropped. And it, uhm…whoo boy. Check out those dislikes! That’s uhm…that’s quite the difference between thumbs up and thumbs down. Yikes.

I won’t lie. I get it. I really do. Sonic is ugly. He looks bad. That’s just…real bad. I concede that Sonic would be really tricky to pull off well in a live action context, but this was clearly not pulling it off.

And the plot…okay, it’s a first trailer for a movie that doesn’t come out until November, so we don’t get a lot of plot. Basically Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has wound up on Earth somehow and is trying to prevent a catastrophe. Something bad happens that might be his fault but might very well be someone else’s, and the military enlists the help of Professor Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey) to try and get to the bottom of things. At the same time, Sonic befriends a police officer (played by James Marsden) and the two set out to…do something. It’s not entirely clear what the end goal is honestly. Robotnik seems unfamiliar with Sonic, which at least suggests that it’s not his fault.

This plot is serviceable, I suppose. I’m not thrilled with them bringing Sonic to earth, pulling a Smurfs is always a bad idea in my book. But I don’t find the idea offensively bad or anything. Just ill advised.

Yeah, this is the part where I say something kind of controversial. I don’t think this looked awful. Well, no, it does look awful, whoever okayed that design for Sonic should be fired. But the voice acting for Sonic is good, his and Robotnik‘s lines fit the characters (Carrey is hamming it up a bit much for my tastes I concede, but not to a deal breaking degree), the effects themselves don’t look bad, Marsden seems okay…

Guys, I think I kind of like this trailer? Like, a lot? Don’t get me wrong, Sonic does look awful, I truly cannot emphasize that enough, but this really does otherwise feel like a Sonic the Hedgehog movie to me. An odd one to be sure, but none of this screams bad to me. The humor is…not great, but never cringe inducing, the acting all seemed on point, the CGI stuff all looks like it’s actually there, everything was adding up to me. If I can get past the protagonist’s appearance (a problem I shouldn’t have, admittedly) then I really think I might enjoy this movie. I concede that I’m only a casual Sonic fan, I even like a couple of the Wii games *gasp* but I’m willing to give this a shot.

Gay, she/her. An unabashed Disney fangirl, who may or may not have an excessive love of shipping, comics, and RPGs. She's not saying. And anything you've heard about attempts to start a cult centered around Sofia Boutella is...probably true.
