The Dark Phoenix International Trailer Rocks

Why oh why wasn’t this the X-Men: Dark Phoenix trailer released here in America? After two kind of lackluster trailers, I wasn’t feeling the new Sophie Turner-led film as much as I wanted. I can safely say I feel much better now. This international trailer is pretty nice.

To be fair, it mostly has the same content as the trailer released yesterday. What a difference structure makes, though. This one follows a much clearer progression that, while possibly giving away too much, lays out the beats of the story and the events within. You see Jean as a kid, the incident that gives her her cosmic Phoenix powers, the awakenings of said power, and the villain who encourages her to embrace them. It all looks promising, more than any trailer otherwise released.

Dark Phoenix appears much more like a character study of Jean Grey’s whole life, which is frankly the only way to do this story the respect it deserves.

The Dark Phoenix arc is one of the best and most iconic storylines in X-Men history, and for good reason. It’s an epic, character-driven story with numerous surprises and grand moments, and the Dark Phoenix is one of (if not the most powerful) villains they ever face. The fact it’s Jean only raises the emotional stakes for the better. Comic fans are most certainly waiting in the wings to rip this movie apart if it fails. They may do so for the slightest misstep. I can already hear the grumbling at the lack of Shi’ar.

I feel better now. And if it helps those of you wavering about it, just remember that X-Men movies tend to alternate in quality from movie to movie. With Apocalypse being such a disaster, there’s a good chance this one will be pretty damn good.

Dark Phoenix is scheduled to wipe you from existence on June 7.
